Just west of Waupaca, Hartman Creek State Park is a standout location for photo sessions. The park packs incredible variety into one spot — towering pines, hardwood forests, open meadows, and the stunning spring-fed lakes. Trails wind through glacial terrain with mossy rocks, rolling hills, and beautifully dappled light filtering through the trees.

Every season brings something different, from vibrant fall color to snow-covered winter stillness, making it a location you can return to year-round.

Spanning about forty acres of rolling fields, meadows, wooded timber, and wetland areas, Jorgens Park Preserve encompasses the northern and eastern shores of Silver Lake.  Carsten and Dora Jorgens, who lived and worked this land for nearly 100 years, left it to the community with the wish that it remain undeveloped and open for public enjoyment. That heritage gives the property a special, unhurried character that comes through in photos. The variety of scenery — open meadows, wooded trails, wetland edges, and Silver Lake shoreline — offers natural backgrounds for portraits, families, and engagements alike. A restored barn, two fishing piers, a picnic pavilion, and native prairie restoration round out the backdrops available here. It's a hidden gem worth making the short drive to Scandinavia for.

Emmons Creek Barrens is a State Natural Area set on sandy glacial outwash, featuring a semi-open oak savanna with scattered open-grown bur and white oaks.  Dense patches of wild lupine dominate the ground layer, creating seas of purple blooms in late spring that are absolutely stunning in photos. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail passes through the area, and the hike meanders through a variety of environments — open savanna, wooded hollows, and wetland edges — giving photographers a surprising amount of variety in a single location. Hikers may even observe trout spawning in Emmons Creek in mid to late October, making fall visits especially memorable. This is a wilder, more rugged spot that rewards those willing to explore.

Whispering Pines, now part of Hartman Creek State Park, was once a beloved public park and has since been lovingly restored by the Friends of Hartman Creek and the Waupaca Historical Society. Towering 100-year-old white pines canopy the grounds, and the park sits elevated above the stunning blue-green waters of Marl and Pope Lakes. The flat, accessible terrain means you can move easily through the space, making it a relaxed and unhurried location for any session. The soft, filtered light under the pines is especially beautiful, and the overlooks above the lake offer dramatic backdrops that feel worlds away from everyday life. New viewing vistas, reclaimed ash benches, and interpretive signage add charming details throughout the grounds  — all of which translate wonderfully in photos.

Sometimes the best backdrops are right in town. Waupaca's charming downtown offers a mix of historic storefronts, brick architecture, and community character that works wonderfully for senior portraits, couples, or anyone who wants an urban-meets-small-town feel. The tree-lined streets, painted building facades, and quiet sidewalks offer a completely different aesthetic from the natural settings nearby — making it a great option when clients want variety in their gallery or when the weather doesn't cooperate in the parks.

Swan Park is a 140-acre park in the heart of Waupaca that might surprise you with how many photogenic corners it holds. In addition to its athletic facilities, the park features a splash pad, playground, skatepark, sledding hill, and several miles of trails. For photographers, the trails and green spaces offer casual, relaxed settings that work especially well for family sessions with young children. The open lawns and wooded trail edges provide natural light without a lot of visual clutter, and the variety of features makes it easy to keep active kids engaged and moving — which always leads to better, more natural shots.

South Park, Riverside Park & More

Waupaca's city park system is a quietly underrated collection of photo locations, and the variety across the parks means there's something for every client and every style of session. South Park sits between Mirror and Shadow Lakes at the south end of Main Street, offering sandy beach areas, flower beds, a fishing pier, and gorgeous lake views  — the kind of open waterfront setting that glows in golden hour light.  Across the system you'll find open meadows, wooded paths, lakefront scenery, and manicured green spaces that suit everything from quick milestone sessions to full family portraits. The accessibility and free admission make these parks an easy go-to option for clients at any time of year.

When spring arrives in the Waupaca area, apple orchards transform into some of the most breathtaking backdrops of the entire year. For a brief and beautiful window in May, the trees burst into full bloom — clouds of soft white and pale pink blossoms as far as the eye can see. The light during this time of year is gentle and flattering, and the delicate floral canopy overhead creates a naturally romantic, ethereal quality that's nearly impossible to recreate in any other setting. It's a fleeting season, so timing is everything, but clients who plan their sessions around peak bloom are rewarded with truly stunning, one-of-a-kind images. Orchard sessions work beautifully for engagements, couples, and families — and the soft pastel tones translate wonderfully whether you're going for light and airy or rich and moody edits.

Once the leaves have fallen and the landscape settles into its quieter winter palette, Christmas tree farms step in as one of the most charming and colorful settings of the cold season. Rows of deep green evergreens provide rich, lush color against grey skies and frost-covered ground, and the cozy holiday atmosphere puts families instantly at ease in front of the camera. Whether clients come dressed in coordinating plaids, warm knits, or classic holiday red, the setting does all the heavy lifting. Kids love exploring the rows of trees, and that natural curiosity and movement leads to some of the most genuine, joyful images of the year.  The Waupaca area has tons of farms to explore and if you have your favorite we might even be able to photograph your annual tree harvest!

Vibrant Wildflower Meadow

Just outside of Waupaca, Barnwood Farms has quickly earned a reputation as a photographer's playground, offering lush floral fields, rolling countryside, intimate wooded nooks, and wide-open landscapes all on one property. With approximately 115 varieties of flowers, fillers, ornamental grasses, and herbs, the farm offers a truly unique floral setting unlike anything else in the area.  The property works beautifully for engagement sessions, senior portraits, and family photography, and the ever-changing blooms mean no two sessions ever look quite the same. Whether you're shooting in the vibrant flower fields, along the rustic barn exterior, or in the grassy back fields, the variety of backdrops here is hard to beat.

Please note that Barnwood Farms charges a session fee to photograph on the property. The fee includes access to the farm for up to two hours as well as a private changing room, and goes toward keeping the grounds blooming and beautiful year-round.

Sometimes the most meaningful backdrop for a photo session isn't a park or a scenic overlook — it's the place where your family actually lives. Your home and property are filled with the details that make your story uniquely yours: the front porch where your kids play, the garden you've tended for years, the sprawling backyard where summers are spent, or the wide open fields of a family farm that have been part of your life for generations. Sessions in familiar surroundings have a way of putting even the most camera-shy family members at ease, and that comfort translates directly into more natural, genuine images. Instead of posing in a place you've never been, you're simply being yourselves in a place you love — and that always shows in the final photos. Cozy in-home sessions are especially great for people with limited mobility and families with newborns. Its also great for a multi-generational family portrait on the family farm, or a candid lifestyle session that captures the everyday magic of your home life, these are often the sessions that become the most treasured of all.
